Cells crawl. Not metaphorically, literally: a cell heading towards a wound builds a scaffold inside itself, pushes its front edge forward, pulls its back end up, and repeats. The scaffold is actin, and the protein governing how fast it assembles and comes apart is thymosin beta-4, one of the most abundant proteins inside your cells.
Researchers narrowed down which part of that protein carried the actin-binding activity and found it in a short stretch near the middle. TB-500 is that stretch, synthesised on its own.
What it actually is
Thymosin beta-4 is 43 amino acids. TB-500 is the active fragment, so it is a much smaller molecule with a different molecular weight and a different certificate. Same activity of interest, a fraction of the size.
This distinction is genuinely useful to hold onto. The literature sometimes cites work on the full protein in support of the fragment and the other way round, so checking which molecule a study actually used will sharpen your reading of it considerably.
The quick tell is molecular weight. Around 4900 Da is the full protein. The fragment is far lighter.
