One of the few compounds here with a genuinely specific target. It binds to cardiolipin, a fat found only in the inner membrane of mitochondria, which is why research on it concentrates on mitochondrial function.
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide with selective affinity for cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane. That specificity distinguishes it from most peptides in this catalogue, where mechanisms are inferred rather than defined, and it is why the compound reached clinical development under the name elamipretide.

Developed from the Szeto-Schiller series of cell permeable antioxidant peptides. Progressed through clinical trials as elamipretide, also referenced as MTP-131 and Bendavia.
How it is thought to work
Cardiolipin is confined to the inner mitochondrial membrane and is essential to the organisation of the electron transport chain. SS-31 associates with it and is proposed to stabilise cristae architecture.
The downstream account is that better organised cristae support more efficient electron transport and less electron leak, which would reduce reactive oxygen species production. That is the proposed chain rather than a demonstrated one at every step.
