The cell's main internal antioxidant. Researchers usually measure the ratio between its used and unused forms as an indicator of how much oxidative stress a cell is under.
Glutathione is a tripeptide, Glu-Cys-Gly, and the principal intracellular antioxidant across most cell types. The ratio of reduced to oxidised forms is a standard readout in redox biology, which is why the reduced form is what most protocols specify.
Where it came from
Isolated in the 1880s and structurally characterised in the 1930s. It is among the most thoroughly studied small molecules in biochemistry.
How it is thought to work
The free thiol on the cysteine residue donates electrons to neutralise reactive species, becoming oxidised glutathione in the process. Glutathione reductase regenerates the reduced form using NADPH.
